Neighbourhood by neighbourhood,Barcelona
In Barcelona we bring face painting and balloon twisting, kids’ shows and bouncy castles to birthdays, parent associations and street committees, in a city that dresses itself up street by street every August.
Barcelona celebrates by neighbourhood. In August, Gràcia and Sants decorate their streets for a competition, and every committee is out to win. In September, La Mercè spreads a family programme across parks such as the Ciutadella. And Sant Andreu de Palomar usually saves its Festa Major for late November.
For a street committee or a parent association, what fits best amid so much programme is a moment of its own: a dance duel in the square, or a face painting and balloon twisting corner with a wristband for every child, so they wait while they play.
At home, which in the city is often a flat, more party fits than you might think: a dressing table, a chair and a speaker take up one corner of the living room.
When is it party time here?
- on 4 and 5 January
- Neighbourhood parades on the eve, like the one in Poblenou; on the 5th, the Three Kings arrive by sea at the Portal de la Pau.
- in August
- The festes majors of Gràcia and, right after, of Sants: decorated streets and a decoration competition.
- in late September
- La Mercè, with the 24th as the main day and a family programme in parks from Montjuïc to the Besòs.
Which show fits here?

The K-Pop Battle
For a neighbourhood party that wants its own dance-off in the square: girls against boys, and the audience picks a side.

Braids & Glitter
The glitter is water-resistant: if the birthday falls around Sant Joan, when the city’s beaches stay open all night, it reaches the verbena, the midsummer street party, intact.

How long does it take us to get here?
We set off from Vilanova i la Geltrú and head up the coast: about 50 km to the centre of Barcelona, around 43 minutes without traffic. The minutes change with the neighbourhood and the time of day, so tell us the street when you ask for your quote and we will tell you when we will arrive.
What people ask us
Do I need permission to hold the party in a square in my neighbourhood?
If it spills out onto the public highway, the district authorises it, and each one has its own criteria. In Les Corts, for example, they ask for at least a month’s notice. Check with yours before fixing a date.
Do you do anything for Christmas and the Three Kings?
Yes: a visit from Father Christmas in which a Grinch pops up every now and then to sow chaos, with a souvenir photo. It works well the afternoon before or after the parade.
Do you bring face painting to a street party?
Yes, as an offer for the committee: one artist for every twelve children per hour, and Tito making a balloon figure for each of them.
